Races (Manga)

The three primary races of Tortus (Humans, Demons and Beastmen).

The world of Tortus is populated by various beings that shape its environment and culture. Because of that each race has their own unique culture, tradition, heritage and beliefs that affect how they have developed and changed thorough-out the course of the history of Tortus.

The main three races of Tortus are Humans, Beastmen and Demons. There are also other races that are famous but believed to be extinct like Vampires and Dragonmen.

Humans[]

The most populous race of Tortus. Humans resided on the northern part of the continent. Humans have a relatively moderate understanding of magic compared to other races such as Demons or Vampires. The average Human lifespan is around 70 years. Most average Humans have a maximum of Stats of no more then 100 to 200 while those that possessed a Job ranged from 300-400.

Most of the Humans of Tortus once worshiped Ehit as a God, which believers have organized into the Holy Church of Ehit. As most Humans are religious, the Holy Church has a vast amount of influence among Humans and the Human Kingdoms. It is due to their fervent faith to Ehit that the Humans have come into conflict with other races such as Demons and Beastmen as they consider most of the other races Godless heretics and impure beings to be defeated. The main human nations are the Heiligh Kingdom and the Hoelscher Empire. After learning the truth from Hajime, Aiko and Liliana of Ehit's true nature as an Evil God, most Humans lost their fate in Ehit and the Heiligh Kingdom tries to reconcile with the Beastmen after that.'

Beastmen[]

Beastmen also known as Demi-Humans is a category to describe Humanoid races who carry traits of those similar to animals. Most Beastmen live in the far east of the continent in the Sea of Trees. Unlike Humans or Demons, Beastmen do not possess mana and the ability to manipulate magic as any Beastmen that can use mana is considered cursed and will be executed according to ancient law. Beastmen have varying lifespans with some races like the Rabbitmen being comparable to Humans while others such as Elves can live for centuries but usually around 200 years. Beastmen's Stats can range between 300 to 600 depending on individual race and it's characteristics. Most Beastmen do not worship any deities instead choosing to revere nature. Both Humans and Demons look down on Beastmen as a lesser race that is abandoned by Ehit and persecute them. Because of this, most Beastmen are reclusive as they choose to reside in the Sea of Trees where they are free to live in peace of persecution. Despite this, there are those who prey on Beastmen and hunt them such as Hoelscher Empire which hunts down Beastmen to turn them into slaves.

Most Beastmen live in the country of Verbergen, which is the unified country of Beastmen that is located in the Sea of Trees. It is governed by a Council of elders which makes laws and decisions about the future of Verbergen and the Beastmen. It consists of representatives of various races such as Bearmen, Tigermen, Harpies, Foxmen, Molemen and Elves. Due to the actions of the Haulia Tribe in helping defend Verbergen from the Demons attacks as well as defeating the Hoelscher Empire and liberating all of it's Beastmen slaves, the Rabbitmen were granted a seat on the Council which was given to Cam Haulia.

The aquatic Dagon mostly live in the Coastal City of Erisen. Due to their racial traits, they were capable of swimming and diving underwater. The Dagons of the Coastal City of Erisen provide around 70% of the continents marine produce. It is due to this usefulness that the Heiligh Kingdom guaranteed their safety despite the fact that the Dagon were Beastmen and the Kingdom's usual distaste for Beastmen.

Demons[]

The least populous race in comparison to Humans or Beastmen. Demons reside in the southern half of the continent. In comparison to Humans, Demons have a far higher magical affinity, as they are able to cast spells with much shorter incantations and smaller magic circles in comparison to Humans evening out the disparity created by the Demons low population numbers. The average Demon lifespan is 120 years. Demons Stats can range between 300 to 600.

Each Demon citizen is capable of using magic adeptly and are fervent in their beliefs. Demons look down on Humans due to worshipping Alva as their own God and the Demons inherent belief that they are the most superior race in Tortus. Demons, like Humans also discriminate against Beastmen due to considering them abominations. Most Demons reside in the Demon Kingdom of Garland.

These must not be confused with the Demons from Hell, like Unknown.

Vampires[]

A unique and powerful race of Tortus that is presumed to be extinct around 300 years ago. Vampires were stated to reside southwestern tip of the southern continent. Vampire's were the least populous race of Tortus, even compared to the likes of Demons. Compared to every other race in Tortus, Vampire's affinity for magic was stated to be the highest, even higher then Demons. Vampires are a long lived race, being able to live up to 200 years and possibly more by drinking the blood of other races to strengthen themselves with their body, magic and extend their lifespan, which is the most unique characteristic of Vampires.

Most Vampires lived in the isolated country of Avatarl. It had chosen to cut off all diplomatic ties with other Kingdoms. Because of their power, various countries have tried to subjugate the country of Avatarl, in order to use the power of the Vampire race to defend their own Kingdoms as well as obtain the princesses hand in marriage. Yue was the Queen of all Vampires. However due to her immortality and high level strength, her subjects and uncle betrayed her and seal her away in the temple of the Great Orcus Labyrinth as it's their duty to protect her from Ehit.

Although not confirmed yet, there are clues that Vampires exist on Earth as according to Yue's Dairy, she encountered a Vampire hunter trying to attack her, who got his crotch smashed as a result.

Dragonmen[]

A legendary race of powerful beings that is presumed to be extinct around 500 years ago. Dragonmen were a race of humanoid beings with the ability to use special magic of "Dragonification" to transform into Dragons that boasted immense strength and defensive ability due to their sturdy scales. It is speculated by Hajime that the special ability of "Dragonification" was imbued into the Dragonmen with the use of "Metamorphosis Magic", though it is unknown how it got inherited. Dragonmen have the ability to control their own mana like Monsters and can use one or more elemental magics that they specialize in according to their Dragon type.

Dragonmen were considered foolish idealists by most races due to their desire to create a Kingdom where every race can live in peace and tranquility. However when they succeeded, the other races bowed and acknowledged them as Kings among Kings due to them creating a Empire in which all races could thrive under their protection. Though the Dragonmen lived in peace with other races for centuries, this changed when Ehit manipulated the events to turn the other races against the Dragonmen, as the various races banded together to destroy their Kingdom and began to kill most of their citizens. Fortunately, a secret village was prepared by the King Kharga Klarus and lead by his his father Adul Klarus to which the surviving Dragonmen fled to. The Dragonmen have sworn to defeat Ehit and free Tortus from his manipulations which ended in success when Aiko, Hajime and Liliana exposed the truth of Ehit and Hajime later killed Ehit.

Gods[]

Gods are divine beings who are often the targets of worship. Most worlds have some kind of being that represent the deities that mortal races offer their fervor in hopes of obtaining their favor.

However, in Tortus, behind his benevolent masks, the supposed God of Tortus is cruel and sinister who cares nothing for his worshippers and mistreated Humans as pawns but yet they're cowards while terrified either death or their nature been exposed. The false God of Tortus is not in fact a divine deity or immortal but is rather a Humanoid Alien that arrived from another world, which was home to advanced magic which he brought with him. After originally helping the mortal races of Tortus, the majority of those beings died leaving the few that survived alone. The remaining survivors experimented on themselves to achieve immortality, which they succeeded, increasing their power and granting them immortality but losing their physical forms in the process, existing as sentient souls. Driven to madness by their isolation, he started to view the mortal races of Tortus as pawns and playthings for his own amusement, often manipulating the various races of Tortus to wage war against each other. It was due to Ehit wanting to balance the conflict between the Humans and Demons, which caused him to summon the "Hero Party" to Tortus until the balance of Ehit's game of death was destroyed forever after the Human worshippers turned against him and later Ehit was slayed by Hajime. After Ehit's death, in order to avert a crisis in faith, the narrative that "all the evil deed made in Ehit's name were done by a doppelganger" began to settle in. Though the people of Tortus still worship Ehit in the original idealistic form, the Holy Church, now under leadership by those once shunted by the old order, opens to worship Aiko Hatayama as their newly "Goddess of Victory". The truth and especially those regarding Ehit's malevolence, would only be privy amongst the Returnees, and a selected number of human leadership. As the result of the new narrative, Beastmen were no longer be preached as an "inferior" race and afforded equal status in nations of Tortus, as slavery is now outlawed throughout.

In the After Story, there are a few benevolent Gods such as the Aularodde Lea Refeat, who summoned and later accompanied Kouki Amanogawa on his journey. Her role as Goddess was more akin to a job similar to the typical supervisor, and not some manipulator like Ehit, who was just an empowered human.

In the Desert World, the inhabitants worship the nature Goddess known as Foltina, who is thought of as the mother of all nature and a living manifestation of the Blessing Power that inhabits nature and of the flora that dwells in the world.

In the Star Spirit World, Lutria, the avatar of the World Branch Tree, along with her direct subordinates (the divine spirits) are also Gods.

Apostles[]

The True Apostle were created by Ehit, God of Tortus. They are non-living beings as they have no souls or emotions. They have complete obedience for their master and creator. Apostle's were considered the most powerful race in Tortus as Ehit grafted various enhancements onto them granting them various superhuman abilities. Apostle's were physically much stronger then any Beastmen, even surpassing the strength of most common Dragonmen. Their magical abilities were superior to Demons and even Vampires, who are noted for their strong magic affinity. This is due to Apostle's possessing a unlimited supply of mana due to having a mana crystal which grants them a infinite amount of mana as their heart as well as the ability to manipulate all kind of magic due to their inherent "All Elemental Affinity" skill.

They are biologically immortals but the only way to kill them is to destroy the heads or hearts.

Most Apostles were sent as reconnaissance agents, to manipulate the mortal races of Tortus for Ehit's amusement or to assassinate individuals who deviate from their master's plans and designs.

However, they went extinct after their deaths by Hajime Nagumo's party during the war against Ehit in the Heiligh Kingdom. It was suspected that the Apostles turned into Spirits.

Spirits[]

Spirits are non-physical and harmless entities. They are souls who can transfer into bodies such as Kaori's Spirit that resided in Noint's corpse. Even if their body is dusted or destroyed, Spirits still seek out to reside in host bodies. In fact, the Apostles Noint and Hearst resided in two of Hajime's spider golems after they were defeated. Miledi also became a Spirit to reside in the golem body her companion made.

Evil Spirits are malevolent and sinister unlike ordinary Spirits as they are cruelly seeking host bodies to control them against those who they've care such as an Evil Spirit controlling Kaori against Hajime only for him to free Kaori and killed the Evil Spirit. The demons from Hell are the most recent examples of Evil Spirits.

Zombies[]

Zombies, better known as the undead, are deceased Humans who are reanimated from the dead by infections or diseases. The normal Zombies eats living things. They don't have Human memories. When bitten by them or scratch anyone, the infection turned them into Zombies.

In Tortus, the Zombies who are reanimated by Eri Nakamura, are not in fact eaters but rather soldiers who are controlled by Eri as puppets. The souls of the dead were tormented and enslaved by Eri to do her bidding. The only way to kill these Zombies soldiers is destroying their heads or entire body. They're not in fact, infected or diseased either.

Hybrids[]

Hybrids are halves species either from childbirth between two races or having an undergone mutation or surgery. Other than the examples listed below, this can apply to Half-Vampires, Half-Demons, Half-Dragonmen, Half-Dagons, and so on.

Human/Monsters Hybrid[]

Human/Monster Hybrids are rare species of Humans who gained monstrous appearance and inhuman strength through mutations from consuming Monster's meat and drinking liquefied mana. Their original bodies changed into muscular and taller body. Their strength, speed, senses are stronger then Beastmen and ordinary Monsters and their mana is even more powerful than normal mana blessed Humans, and Demons as their strength and abilities are completely inhuman and monstrous. Due to withstanding the fatal ingestion of Monster flesh, they can further increase their stats and gain the special magic/skills of the Monsters that they absorb. They have purple spiked bloods cells, red tattooed-like veins even both their hair turned from original to white and eyes turned to crimson red. Their mana turned from normal to crimson. They are not in fact, Humans anymore. They can easily break bones and damage organs of Humans (including those who are blessed with physical abilities). According to Cattleya, if the Hybrids are anything like the normal monsters, both of their monstrous and inhuman strength were checked out. Only Restoration magic can recover a Human/Monster Hybrid's full condition.

Apostle Hybrids[]

Apostle Hybrids are originally individuals who belonged to another race but have undergone the Apostle transformation process under Ehit's supervision, thus being granted the physical abilities and skills of the Apostles which is more powerful than strength blessed Humans but paled in comparison of Monster Hybrids.
