He was originally a member of the Hero Party, where he was ostracized for receiving the commonplace "Synergist" job and his weak stats, until his presumed death in the Great Orcus Labyrinth, after which he discovered the truth about the world and made it his goal to return to Japan at all costs.
Hajime after (left) and before (right) his transformation.
Before his transformation from consuming monster meat, Hajime had black hair, brown eyes, and a slim body, along with a kind face. His outfit after arriving in Tortus consisted of a dark-green jacket, a gray shirt with a red striped zipper, dark-green pants, and brown boots.
After falling into the abyss in the Great Orcus Labyrinth, Hajime lost his left arm to the Claw Bear on the first floor. After eating Twin-tailed Wolves, his body began to wither away. He immediately drank the Ambrosia he found in the abyss to counter the poisonous effects of the monster meat. His body began to heal and grow stronger and becoming more muscular. Due to the stress of the revitalization, his hair turned white. His eyes also turned blood-red and his body gained tattoo-like crimson-red veins. Inside of his body, his normal red blood cells turned into a purple spiked blood cells, a sign of becoming a demonic monster. He also grew 10 cm in height. This change in his appearance (along with his personality and abilities) made it difficult for those who knew Hajime before to recognize him at first, only recognizing him because of his voice and facial features. He later lost his right eye during his battle against the Hydra on the 100th floor.
After completing the Great Orcus Labyrinth and gaining creation magic, Hajime's outfit consisted of a black coat with crimson red linings, a gray vest, a buttoned white shirt, a black cravat terminated by a ring tied around his neck, a pair of black pants, black armed boots, and gun holsters in both sides of his legs. He also replaced his lost left arm with a prosthetic arm, and his lost right eye with an artifact called the Demon Eye. His appearance has been described to look like an anime character, something Hajime is painfully aware of.
After killing Ehit, Hajime has his hair and eyes revert back to their original colors, thanks to a metamorphosis magic artifact. He also disguises his prosthetic arm and Demon Eye to make them look as close to his original appearance.
Personality
Pre-Fall
Hajime was originally very laid back and timid, but was humble, with a kind and gentle heart. Though mild-mannered, soft spoken, calm and peaceful, he had a special type of bravery and strength of heart that allowed him to sacrifice his own dignity and well-being to protect people from harm. Kaori noted that it would be easy to be a hero to fight against evil if one were already strong, but it takes true strength to go against evil if one knows that they are weak. His strength of heart is evident by his ability to keep calm when his class faced extreme danger from a Behemoth. While Kouki had momentarily been paralyzed by fear, Hajime snapped him out of it. He had a motto of "Hobbies First", and would put his hobbies over everything else, despite being ridiculed by his peers. He was also considered mature by some, especially his true friends. He was lazy at school mainly because his future is already set and he would be likely to work at his father's videogame company. He always comes to school when the class almost started, sleep the entire lesson, and wake up when it's break time or school is over. This is because he stays up late to play video games or read manga, sometimes helping his father and mother with their work. His grades are average and he doesn't play sports at all.
Post-Fall
“
I'll protect you, and you'll protect me. As long as we watch each other's backs, we'll be stronger than anyone. We'll beat down anyone who stands against us and burst our way out of this shitty world!
After being thrown into the abyss to die because of Hiyama's betrayal, the anger, the fear of dying, the despair and the several days of hunger in a row pushed Hajime to the absolute limit of his sanity. All these factors mixed with his desire to survive and return to Japan at any cost, making his gentle personality to change into that of a cold, ruthless, brutal, bloodthirsty, unstable and sadistic killer. Hajime has almost completely abandoned all of his old kind and generous nature, exchanging it for that of a cold, misanthrope and indifferent man capable of even abandoning a person to death without a second thought. This can be seen when Hajime's goal is not to free Tortus from Ehit's tyranny by defeating him. Rather, it is the opposite.
Hajime's only concern is to survive and return to Japan with no concern for the fate of Tortus or its inhabitants. He no longer even cares about his former classmates that he is even willing to kill them without any hesitation, if they become his enemies, something he proved when he killed Shimizu, a former classmate who had turned traitor in cold blood without the slightest hesitation. He has stated that he will murder all the humans, demons and even destroy Tortus itself if he has to. He will show no mercy to anyone, including his own classmates if they dare to cross him. Shizuku and Aiko have even acknowledged he would slaughter them, if they were to attack him at the instigation of the Heiligh Kingdom and the Holy Church, which resulted in all his former colleagues developing a strong fear of him, for they fear invoking his wrath and being brutally killed by his hands, especially his old bullies who are most afraid of him than the rest. Hajime has developed a habit of smiling in front of danger, which resulted in him being nicknamed "Predator".
Due to the hardships he had suffered, Hajime developed a firm belief in independence, namely relying on one's own abilities to solve problems and to overcome obstacles independently. Thus, when he was safeguarding Shea's family and clansmen, Hajime opted to train the Haulia Tribe to be strong enough to protect themselves, instead of remaining with them to protect them for an indefinite period of time. Additionally, Hajime refused to do anything about Ehit's manipulation of the people of Tortus, stating to Miledi that it is their own problem to solve, and that he has no intention nor any obligation to risk his life for their well-being, as she and her fellow Liberators had. He also refused Chase's attempts to persuade him to rejoin them or teach the Heiligh Kingdom's Synergists how to manufacture firearms to aid them in their war efforts.
Kouki has stated Hajime could have convinced him of Ehit's true nature as an evil god by thoroughly explaining it several times. Hajime simply called Kouki stupid, fiercely criticizing him and his other classmates' beliefs that they must always risk life and limb to protect others as delusional and naïve, stating that it is because they keep holding onto and believing in such ridiculous ideas that they allowed Eri and Hiyama to stab them in the back, nearly leading to their own deaths, because the blind faith they had in each other made them completely ignorant of the possibility that one of them might end up betraying them. Hajime also told Shizuku to stop being so protective of her classmates in the Frost Caverns of Schnee as they must learn to overcome their own trials by themselves in order to attain Age of God's Magic to realize their respective goals.
Hajime also believes that it is strong resolve and determination, rather than power and abilities, that allow one to realize their goals. Therefore, when Kouki criticized Hajime's refusal to defeat Ehit and save Tortus, Hajime took the chance to berate Kouki's indecisiveness, weak will, and misguided faith in his naïve idealisms by pointing out that despite being blessed by Ehit with the strongest powers out of his classmates in the beginning, he keeps screwing up during desperate moments when it truly mattered, such as during Cattleya's ambush and Eri's death trap, because he values his delusional and empty pride above one's own desires and goals.
Due to his belief in independence and his desire to just survive and return to Japan, Hajime is completely indifferent regarding the situation in Tortus, since he doesn't care about saving the lives of those who worship Ehit blindly, considering it a waste of time and effort. This causes Ehit to fear Hajime and consider him much more dangerous than the Liberators, as he is willing to cross the line they were not willing to cross: kill civilians. Hajime will mercilessly kill anyone who gets in his way, regardless of who they are or what their motivations are, because he killed his own classmates (Shimizu and Hiyama), and caused a massacre of all of Ehit's apostles and followers, whether human or not.
Despite his merciless nature, Hajime cares deeply for his comrades, as they are the last and only fragment of his kindness that Hajime has not lost or abandoned. Kaori and Shizuku noted that, despite his newfound strength, confidence, and courage, Hajime is always desperate to protect his comrades and to defend against any potential dangers that may befall them, a trait he has exemplified even before his fall into the Great Orcus Labyrinth. As the series progresses, Hajime recovers a little more of its former goodness and eventually proves himself to be willing to help the weak and helpless, particularly if his companions coax him into doing it, though he often does it while still demonstrating a cold demeanor. His methods are efficient and merciless, frequently to the point of brutality. He is resistant to guilt trips and very difficult appeals to his moral compass, as seen when Kouki repeatedly tries to make appeals to Hajime's morals and fails. Despite outwardly appearing reckless and brave, Hajime is actually quite cautious, taking any possible precaution to prevent disadvantages, even if they are minimal and is not willing to take any unnecessary and futile risk, such as his refusal to part with his techno-magical firearms and artillery when More Nos wanted to buy his weapons, or when Chase tried to persuade him to help the Heiligh Kingdom mass-produce firearms for their war.
Hajime knew that with Ehit's absolute influence over the people of Tortus, giving up his weapons to the Holy Church and Heiligh Kingdom would be an extremely risky mistake, as he knows that they will all eventually be turned against him. Hajime even threatened Chase with death if he ever tried to steal Donner, much to the shock of Aiko and his classmates. Hajime also took the opportunity to tell Aiko of what he learned about Ehit, in order to warn and gain her help & support in warning his other classmates about it. His motives were not altruism, but to minimize the chance that his classmates would turn against him under Ehit's manipulation. Hajime also reluctantly agreed to Kouki's party members' requests in helping them gain Age of God's Ancient Magic as a precaution, in case he needed their help to fight against more of Ehit's apostles. Hajime also told Shizuku that he preferred to resolve problems early rather than at the last minute before it went out of control, lamenting that Kaori's murder and nearly becoming an undead slave by Hiyama's hands was traumatizing, even for himself.
Even though Hajime no longer cares about his classmates (except Kaori, Shizuku and Yuka), Hajime was still willing to take them back to Japan, but only if they wanted to. If they chose to remain in Tortus, for whatever reason, Hajime would abandon them there and return to Japan forever without a second thought. Despite his merciless personality, Hajime can still be somewhat merciful; when he met Cattleya, considering that his mission was only to rescue the Hero's Party, Hajime was willing to let her live if she backed down, despite Shimizu and Eri being traitors and the horrors they committed, Hajime was still willing to give them another chance if they were truly remorseful of their action, only not having done so because he saw that they had already fallen so far that there was no longer any salvation for them. Furthermore, when he and Tio first met, despite the two of them fighting with the intention of killing each other, and with Hajime himself being willing to kill her, he let her live when Yue pointed out that Tio wasn't actually aware of who was attacking them, making him question whether she could really be considered an enemy. When he was reunited with Hiyama, despite all the physical, verbal and emotional abuse he had caused him, both in Japan and in Tortus, including having tried to kill him months earlier, Hajime did not reveal his failed assassination attempt nor did he bother to kill him personally, since he believed that Hiyama wasn't even worth his time anymore, unfortunately, this turned out to be a mistake he would later regret. Even when Hajime finally lost his patience with Kouki's delusions, which made him want to kill him out of sheer annoyance, Hajime held back in consideration of Kaori and Shizuku's feelings.
This shows that although Hajime is genuinely ruthless, he might still be at least pragmatic enough to let they live if that option is actually viable and doesn't cause unnecessary deaths. However, this depends entirely on the circumstances and needs of him and his companions.
While Hajime is usually blunt and cold to most people after his transformation and is not above expressing his annoyance with even those close to him, he is very spoiling towards those he loves, his family, or towards people he's become fond of. Though usually cold towards people he meets, Hajime is not above showing respect and behaving courteously towards people he finds interesting (much to the shock and disbelief of his lovers who even question whether he is really okay, much to their annoyance). While he usually scoffs at figures in positions, authority and power, he is shown to express respect to authority figures that are competent, cunning and who are willing to help others, such as Catherine Walker, Ilwa Chang and Duke Lanzwi Feuward Zengen.
Hajime became a very popular person with women. Kouki, who was popular with women before, lost his fame and became jealous of Hajime. But Hajime didn't want to use this to his advantage and initially, he had eyes for Yue and just for her. But after the incident at the Great Haltina Labyrinth, where his feelings for his comrades (harem) were reversed, he realized how much they truly meant to him and subsequently started to accept the romantic attempts of the others around him after accepting Shea as his second girlfriend. This is often shown in how he would flirt with Yue and later his other wives without concern for his surroundings. While he was against Myu calling him "papa," he quickly became a doting and overprotective father to her. When around his in-laws, Hajime is more respectful and patient than how he is with his own birth parents, using polite language when talking with them, something his wives, his classmates and his other close associates still not used to.
While Hajime appears to be one with certain air of arrogance and stubbornness to most people, he can still be "easily talked" into doing things that he'd be initially unwilling to do, by his wives and especially Yue. This was seen when he decided to save the Ankaji Duchy due to the pleas of Yue, Shea, Tio, Kaori, and Myu. Also, his doting tendencies towards Myu does make him more approachable with children, as shown during his stay in Verbergen. He once took up an impromptu babysitting of a group of beastman children, who were fascinated by the stories of his adventures and small trinkets he is able to synergize at will. The scene of children taking an afternoon nap with Hajime was too adorable for his wives, as it reminds them of the future when they too have kids with Hajime.
Another of Hajime's few traits that remain unchanged is that he still remains an otaku - something that Kaori points out, while Shizuku teases him with. Hajime bases most of his creations and even his appearance off things from anime, manga, and video games. He's even gone out of his way to create massive and extremely difficult-to-make artifacts, simply because it would be cooler. Hajime feels very self-conscious about this, as he's fully aware it's all true. Being a Synergist at heart as well, Hajime can become so passionate about what he decides to make that he won't stop or compromise until he finishes what he started. This has led him to go overboard on more than one project and add many pointless but cool features to his artifacts. Shizuku even took advantage of this unchanged trait to ensure that Hajime would not treat Kaori badly, threatening to use her influence as a member of the Hero Party to spread several of his Chuuni nicknames throughout Tortus, a threat that was incredibly effective, much to Yue and Shea's shock.
Due to his otaku nature, Hajime has several fetishes that can cause him to become excited. He has a strong preference to beast-girls, especially bunny girls, as seen when he was reading about the various races of Tortus, lamenting at the harsh conditions that the beastmen were forced to endure. Even after his transformation in the Great Orcus Labyrinth, he still retains this preference, which is shown when he starts fondling Shea's bunny ears. This habit grows much more, especially after Shea becomes his second lover. He also has a fondness of maids, as was seen when he became excited and nearly ogled a Heiligh Kingdom royal maid after she served him a drink. It was due to his obsession with maids that he attempted to inherit Oscar Orcus' will of creating a maid golem. He succeeded by creating Freesia, a human-shaped Grim Reaper. Due to his maid fetish, he created the Fleur Knights, a group of combat maids which consisted of beautiful women which he trained.
After Story
During the Frost Caverns of Schnee, it's revealed that he had some doubts over whether or not he can live in Japan due to how strong he became and was scared of being referred to as a monster. However when he returned from Tortus, he shows his parents the friends and family that he made while exploring Tortus. His parents are very accepting, having heard of his side. Hajime is very glad that his parents aren't upset of what he became nor did they fear him.
Hajime became the leader of the Returners - comprised of survivors amongst his classmates and the wives who came along to Earth with him and get back to his high school life with classmates, with the addition of Yue and Shea joining his class that make up entirely of Returners. His classmates universally look up to him as their leader, amongst them Hajime's "Demon Lord" moniker is equal part of a meme as a sign of respect, which Hajime would regularly play along. Whenever the Soul Sister Rin Hino challenged Hajime, only to suffer humiliation by him, the classmates would joke that she must be a "new hero" for only those who has a hero job class would dare to challenge a "Demon Lord."
By using his skillset as a Synergist, Hajime co-opted several business operations, including a successful one that involves jewelry with Tio and Remia. Hajime has made enough wealth that not only allowed his family (eight wives, Myu and at least seven more children in six years time) to live comfortably and financially independent from his parents, but also to enjoy university life with Yue for no other reason than just to enjoy campus life with her.
Hajime would continue his Synergist trek after returning to Japan. Now with the comfort and safety, he would continue to tinker his arsenal, as well as build further upon it. It is known that he put a constellation of those orbital-based weapon platforms in Earth's orbit, which he doesn't have the heart to tell his father, such when the latter learned what kind of WMD-grade (Weapons-of-Mass-Destruction) firepower he put to use during the battle to save Tortus from Ehit.
Mystical Mutation - In the Great Orcus Labyrinth, Hajime devoured numerous powerful monsters, and managed to survive the lethal process due to the Ambrosia and his iron-forged will. As a result, Hajime's constitution mutated by the magic of the monsters, granting him both tremendous superhuman physical abilities that are completely monstrous and inhuman and a tremendously high status, even breaking pass the level 100 limit. At the cost of his mutation, he no longer considers himself human and is no longer afraid of anything.
Immense Strength - After continuously devouring many powerful monsters and absorbing their powers, by the end of conquering the Great Orcus Labyrinth, Hajime gained tremendous and inhuman superhuman physical strength. His base strength being twelve times higher than Kouki's, who is Ehit's chosen hero, surpassing even Tio, the strongest dragonman, in her dragon form. He is also able to carry his largest and heaviest weapons, such as his oversized pile bunker and his missile launcher, Orkan, with little effort. His strength is so powerful that he can break the effects of spells, such as the Holy Church's "Hymn of Ruin" spell when they intervened in his fight with Noint. Even without resorting to weapons, he can overpower the strongest humans, beastmen, demons, and monsters with pure physical might. He was able to block with only one finger the sword attack of a zombified Meld Loggins, who was the Knight Commander of Heiligh Kingdom. Hajime can also break normal swords, shields, spears, and armors with his bare hands, as he broke Reichi Kondou's spear and both Meld and Hiyama's swords. When using his true power, Hajime can easily break bones and strike with enough force to rupture his enemies' internal organs even humans who were blessed with enhanced physical abilities by Ehit, such as when Hajime broken almost all of Hiyama's bones. He can also throw small harmless objects with extreme force to knock down his opponents, such as when he threw sugar cubes with extreme force to knock down Prince Lundel and his knights. Hajime can carry anyone without even getting exhausted. No matter how strong or durable his enemies were, Hajime could bypass their defensive abilities and defeat them effortlessly. In the Schnee Snow Caverns, Hajime easily overpowered a Limit Break-enhanced Kouki without even using his full strength, bypassing the enhanced protection of Kouki's Limit Break enhanced durability, "Physical Resistance" skill, and Divine Armor, the strongest armor type artifact of the Heiligh Kingdom. Hajime can easily defeat weaker enemies with just one hit even in large numbers, such as Yaegashi Dojo's students and the Soul Sisters.
Immense Speed - Hajime's speed and reflexes are extremely formidable. His agility being at least twelve times faster than his wife, Shizuku Yaegashi, supplemented with his speed-oriented skills, making it impossible for most enemies to detect his movements in battle.
Immense Durability - Hajime has gained superhuman physical durability, making him capable of withstanding attacks that would prove fatal for most people. Hajime's durability is at least twelve times tougher than Ryutarou Sakagami. He didn't receive any sort of injuries from various powerful spells, such as Cattleya's "Dark Gaol". He can use his body as a shield, and feel nothing from spells. Even physical attacks are not strong enough to hurt him. Even when Freid Bagwa ambushed him while got his guard down in the Grand Gruen Volcano, it wasn't enough to kill Hajime, and was still able to fight with his injuries.
Immense Endurance - Due to his countless brutal experiences in the Great Orcus Labyrinth from the agony of consuming monsters, to withstanding numerous life-threatening injuries from fighting all the powerful monsters, Hajime has attained tremendous endurance to grievous pain. Augmented with his mystically mutated vitality and defense status, Hajime can withstand most attacks with only minimal discomfort.
Enhanced Senses - After continuously devouring many different types of powerful monsters throughout the Great Orcus Labyrinth, Hajime has developed superhuman senses. From having to fight different types of monsters that could completely hide their presence throughout the abyss, Hajime has honed his senses to the point where he can easily notice things before almost everyone else. Only Shea has better hearing than him and everyone else due to her long rabbit ears.
Genius Intellect - While his intellectual ability in academic studies is average, Hajime has proven himself to be an extremely clever genius in engineering. He has immense scientific knowledge, which was self-taught from anime, manga, video games, and movies. Hajime's intuition is also extremely accurate, as he was able to correctly deduce that one of his classmates was purposely responsible for the apparent misfired fireball that led to his fall into the deepest depths of the Great Orcus Labyrinth, and that the reason being jealousy towards Kaori's infatuation towards him and would also commit any horrific atrocities to force her to become his slave. This was proven to be correct when Hiyama had assisted Eri in massacring and zombified all the knights of Heiligh Kingdom, lead their classmates into a death trap, and even murdered Kaori herself in order to make her his personal undead sex slave. A fact which even the extremely sharp-minded Shizuku had noticed only when it was too late. Hajime chose to confide in his teacher Aiko about the true reason of his refusal to rejoin them by telling her the secret he learned from Oscar Orcus about Ehit's true nature as a twisted evil god, as he knew that Aiko, who is extremely devoted to her students, would absolutely believe his words, as he is also one of her students whom she prioritizes above all else. Hajime has also shown to be an acute judge of character, as he quickly deduced the real reason why Tio joined his party was because she was hoping to use him for her revenge against Ehit for orchestrating the deaths of her parents and people, prior to her revealing it. After Hajime managed to kill Noint and stop Freid's invasion of the Heiligh Kingdom, he suspected that Ehit would send even more apostles after him. This was proven to be correct when Ehit sent five hundred apostles to support the demons as reinforcements to eliminate Hajime.
Master Inventor - Hajime is an extremely resourceful and innovative inventor, combining his scientific knowledge he learned from various, anime, manga, video games, and movies with his Synergist skills to create powerful techno-magical weapons and other advanced magic-powered machinery, similar to Earth's modern military and science fiction technology. Hajime has proven to be an extraordinarily talented firearms designer, having managed to create firearms and artillery with unique customizations, such as Donner and Schlag, break-action revolvers designed for mid-air reloading and customized with make-shift swing out cylinders to incorporate the greater firepower to the swing out revolvers. Hajime is also a self-taught genius in vehicle engineering, having designed Steiff, a motorcycle, Brise, a pickup truck, a magic-powered submarine, and most of all, Fernir, an airship based on science fiction and military technology.
Master Craftsman - Hajime has trained his craftsmanship as a Synergist to uttermost perfection. He made countless attempts to create modern firearms, which are extremely difficult to create in comparison to swords and armors, and eventually succeeded after countless trials and errors. With unrivaled precision and dexterity in his craftsmanship, Hajime became an outstanding master gunsmith. By combining his transmutation with the Age of God's creation magic, Hajime can create techno-magical artillery of tremendous power. In addition to guns, Hajime can also use his skills to create melee weapons and armor of the highest quality. He can also perfectly repair other artifacts and refine them to be much more powerful. Hajime's masterpieces as a Synergist include his signature revolvers, Donner and Schlag, Shea's war hammer, Drucken, Shizuku's Black Blade, and Suzu Taniguchi's Twin Iron Fans. He is currently considered the best Synergist on Tortus, so much that all of the Heiligh Kingdom's Synergists, including the Heiligh Kingdom's Head Synergist, Volpen Stark, want Hajime to accept them as his disciples after appraising his craftsmanship in Shizuku's Black Blade and perfectly restoring the Heiligh Kingdom's barrier artifact in a matter of seconds. His craftsmanship extends to handicrafts, such as the jewelry-type artifacts he made for his harem with Divinity Stone, which are complex and fanciful. He also dabbles in architecture, since he renovated the Nagumo house to expand it for the sake of his harem, and even added an underground spatial magic basement that impressed even Kaori's father, Tomoichi, a renowned architect.
Master Tactician - Hajime is an extremely pragmatic tactician, relying on unorthodox yet extraordinary strategies that allow him to outsmart most enemies. Before his transformation, Hajime made cunning uses of his "Transmute" skill to first immobilize his opponent before killing it, something that impressed Meld and the other knights who didn't expect him to be of much help at the time. This tactic worked even in the True Great Orcus Labyrinth, where the monsters are stronger. During the battle against the Behemoth, Hajime was able to quickly figure out a way to hold it back so his classmates could launch a barrage of magic attacks against it when they were ready. Hajime is good at taking advantage of the environment to his advantage, as he often uses the terrain to ricochet his bullets so they can hit enemies who are dodging. He managed to expose the truth about the God, Ehit, and had humanity to turn against him with the help of his teacher, Aiko Hatayama, and Princess Liliana S. B. Heiligh.
Training Methods - From his experience in fighting monsters, Hajime has developed unconventional yet effective training methods, which he used to train himself for two months after conquering the Great Orcus Labyrinth. Hajime was later able to train the timid and pacifistic Haulia Tribe into a deadly group of master assassins by weaponizing their natural skills in stealth and agility in just ten days. They are now able to direct enemies into ambushes, and use subterfuge and sneak attack maneuvers. Hajime's classmate Ryutarou considers him a pupil of Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, due to his harsh training methods for others to become strong both physically and mentally.
Master Marksman - Due to his experience in fighting countless powerful monsters with a revolver and further relentless training with Yue in mastering his precision shooting after conquering the Great Orcus Labyrinth, Hajime has outstanding marksmanship in dual-wielding his techno-magical revolvers, Donner and Schlag, to destroy large numbers of powerful enemies in quick succession with deadly accuracy. During his battle against Noint, Hajime was able to aim at a certain point on her twin greatswords and repeatedly shot at it during their mid-air, high-speed close-combat fight until her greatswords broke. Hajime can also wield his larger, more powerful firearms with equally amazing accuracy, even when he's holding them with one arm each. Hajime can ricochet his bullets off surrounding walls, allowing him to hit enemies from their blind spots. He can also pinpoint his enemies' weak points, such as Noint's crystal heart. He is capable of shooting enemies without looking at them, as was demonstrated when he shot the Frost Eagles that were attacking Shizuku. Hajime's marksmanship is so immense that Shizuku wonders if Hajime has a secondary "Gunner" job that grants him such skill.
Stealth Master - Due to his mastery of his "Hide Presence" skill, Hajime is capable of masking and manipulating his presence to avoid detection. He is capable of easily infiltrating secure prisons, as he demonstrated when he rescued Aiko from the Holy Church, and Cam and the other Haulias from the Hoelscher Empire.
Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant - Having never received any form of training before being summoned to Tortus and falling into the abyss, Hajime had self-taught himself how to fight. His fighting style is considered the height of rationality, focusing on effectiveness. His hand-to-hand combat skills are also considered to be too dangerous. Hajime trained extremely extensively to incorporate kicks into his fighting style, which he combines it with his monstrous superhuman physical prowess and "Steel Legs" skill, allowing him to overpower his enemies, even those with enhanced physical abilities, without any effort. He can fight Shea, who has become extremely skilled at martial arts, on equal footing in a pure contents of hand-to-hand. During his final trial of the Frost Caverns of Schnee, Hajime defeated his doppelgänger by fixing all the weakness and wasted movements in his fighting style, becoming better than when he started the fight.
Master Artist - Hajime possesses incredible artistic skills that he learned and developed by handling the illustrations of the games produced by his father's video game company and helping assist his mother, who is a famous shoujo mangaka. Hajime applied his artistic skills into drafting maps on stone tablets to explore the Great Labyrinths, blueprints for his weapons and artifacts, and even incorporating aesthetic designs in his equipment.
Immense Mana - After continuously devouring many powerful monsters throughout the Great Orcus Labyrinth, Hajime's mana grew to extremely powerful and massive levels, far surpassing Atavists such as Yue and Shea, and Tio, a powerful dragonman, all of whom have large mana pools themselves. His original sky-blue mana changed to a crimson-red color. When he releases his mana, it's powerful enough to block immense mana pressures from others, such as when Noint released an immense mana pressure and he protected Aiko who was about to fall unconscious using his own mana pressure. When enraged, he is able to cause others, including all his classmates who have overpowered cheat abilities, to freeze in sheer terror. His mana regeneration and capacities are vast enough for him to operate his flying craft, Fernir, which consumes an immense amount of mana to travel between locations. After having emersed himself in the dragon vein in Japan for extended periods, as a form of training, Hajime's mana reserves have risen to unfathomable levels.
Gun-kata (銃技,Jū-gi?) - A martial art that uses firearms to fight.
Dual Wielding (二丁拳銃,Nichōkenjū?) - A combat-style that involves fighting with two handguns.
Polygon Rebound (多角撃ち,Baundoshotto?) - A technique in which Hajime correctly calculates all the angles of his shots, so that occasionally his bullets collide into each other and ricochet off to hit different targets with perfect accuracy.
Ultra-Fast Quick Draw (神速撃ち,Kuikkudorou?) - A technique in which Hajime fires six bullets simultaneously so that they land on the same spot at almost the same time without even a single millimeter of deviation.
Weaver Stance (ウィーバー・スタンス,Wībā Sutansu?) - A technique to accurately fire a handgun. The right arm is thrust straight forward and the left arm's elbow is slightly bent. One foot is positioned forward and one backwards.
Oscillation Smash (振動粉砕,Shindō Funsai?) - An arm thrust at high-speed vibration using Hajime's prosthetic arm. It is capable of pulverizing large boulders in a single blow.
Shotgun Punch (ショットガンパンチ,Shottoganpanchi?) - An attack where Hajime uses an elbow-mounted shotgun on his prosthetic arm to strengthen his punches.
108 Harassments Demon Lord-style (魔王流嫌がらせ百八式,Maō-ryū Iyagarase Hyakuhachishiki?) - A series of techniques developed by Hajime after the battle with Ehit, in order to deal with various problems.
The Demon Lord is Red (こんなにも魔王が紅いから,Kon'nanimo Maō ga Akaikara?) - Metal particles are scattered and create a large crimson fog that would penetrate all those within it, and spread throughout their blood vessels. Once inside, they would ravage the target from within and inflict intense pain without killing them. Hajime could also use his bird-type golems "Ornis" as a relay point to adjust the dust using "Expanded Transmutation."
Gag Bullet (ギャグ・ブレット,Gyagu Buretto?) - A bullet to make a gag situation in real life. By using restoration magic, the target would be able to stand up again in three seconds after being shot, as though nothing had happened.
Welcome to My Battlefield (俺のバトルフィールドへようこそ,Ore no Batorufīrudo e Yōkoso?) - (The classmate's naming → You Cannot Escape From the Demon Lord-sama!) It was a simple harassment done by having several hundred Crosswelts lay out a wide range space-isolation barrier with a radius and height of three kilometers around Hajime. It was first used when illegal foreign agents on Earth tried to make a move against the Returners. At that time, Shinji and Yoshiki, who carelessly entered the range kept yelling? "Let us out~, let us out from here~?" while hitting on the invisible wall.
You're All Going to Die Down Here (みんなここで死ぬんだ,Min'na Koko de Shinunda?) - A special Grim Reaper - Bio Hazard version, based on the Tyrant Virus, that was created with Tio's help. It is used as a biological weapon and unleashed when the target is trapped in a space-isolating barrier.
I Won't Say Just Once, Want To Try Dying No Matter How Many Times? (いっぺんと言わず、なんべんか死んでみる?,Ippen to Iwazu, Nan Ben ka Shinde Miru??) - Hajime would kill the target, and then revive them with the restoration magic satellite "Bel Agartha," and then kill them again. This process would be repeated over and over again until the target surrenders.
Peek-a-Demon Lord! (いないいないまおう!,Inai Inai Maō!?) - It is a trick carried out by Hajime by using space isolation to completely isolate his presence, and amplified presence within an isolated space using his "Intimidate" skill, after the space isolation is dispelled. A burst of crimson mana would appear afterwards with Hajime grinning widely at the center.
I, Demon Lord-san. I'm Behind You Now (おれ、まおうさん。いま、お前の後ろにいるよ,Ore, Maō-san. Ima, Omae no Ushiro ni Iru yo?) Hajime uses Arachnee golems while using "Telepathy" to forcefully make the listener have the experience of something gradually approaching, and amplifying their sense of fear using spirit magic.
From Today You Too Are Haulia (今日から貴方もハウリア,Kyō Kara Anata mo Hauria?) - Hajime uses an artifact that reproduces a pseudo version of the spirit magic "Divine Edict," which makes its target act chuuni for a period of time.
Wish Upon a Star (星に願いを,Hoshininegaiwo?) - Hajime would utilize multiple Gravity Meteors from outside the stratosphere to attack the target mercilessly. The trajectory and speed of the meteors are adjusted using gravity control, turning all of them into a suitable meteor shower before ending it with a final super giant meteor. However, if a mistake was made, this attack could even shatter the planet.
Make a Contract With Me and Become a Magical Girl! (Forced) (俺と誓約して魔法少女になってよ!(強制),Ore to Seiyaku Shite Mahō Shōjo ni Natte yo! (Kyōsei)?) - It hypnotizes a person into thinking that they are a magical girl. Hajime first uses it against some government agents that tried to spy on him.
Up, U~~p! 4000 Meters High! (たかい、たか~~い!高度四千メートル!,Takai, Taka ~~ i! Kōdo Yon Sen Mētoru!?) - A rocket is attached to the target and leaves them stranded in the sky, while changing their focus into something completely different from before.
The base stats given above aren't Hajime's current stats, as the last time the author provided stats for him in the Web Novel was before he acquired "Evolution Magic" from the Haltina's Labyrinth.
Hajime's base stats increased because of his usage of Skills "Limit Break", which triples his base stats and "Overload", which quintuples his base stats. He can also further boost his base stats with the help of "Evolution Magic" and by using a mineral supplement drink which he created, named "CheatMate", that has the ability to double a person's base stats.

Overload (覇潰,Hatsui?) - It multiplies the user's base stats by fives times, but with twice as much a strain on the body than the normal "Limit Break."
Transcendence (真匠,Shinshō?) - A skill that, unlike Limit Break, doesn't increase the stats and abilities of the user, but instead vastly raises the skill level of the user's latent talent to the maximum and grants them an average person's talent in fields of magic they have no affinity for, making it a skill that only a true master of a craft can acquire. This skill is generally considered hard to get and difficult to use, with normal people probably manage to use it only once in their whole life even after acquiring this skill, but if someone is able to master it, they can reach godly-level in their craft.
Creation Magic (生成魔法,Seisei Mahō?) - One of the ancient magics originating from the "Age of Gods," which grants the ability to imbue magical properties to minerals, creating a new ore with special traits. It is the only form of magic which allows the creation of an artifact. The true power of this magic is the ability to manipulate inorganic material.
Gravity Magic (重力魔法,Jūryoku Mahō?) - One of the ancient magics originating from the "Age of Gods," which grants the user control over gravity. The true power of this magic is the ability to manipulate the planet's energy. It can interfere with a planet's magnetic field or utilize geothermal energy like magma. It can be used to cause earthquakes or volcanic eruptions as well.
Spatial Magic (空間魔法,Kūkan Mahō?) - One of the ancient magics originating from the "Age of Gods," which allows the user to manipulate the space around themselves, allowing them to either bend or expand the space near them or move themselves to another space or location. The true power of this magic is the ability to manipulate boundaries. It can be used to create entire dimensions, as well as manipulate the boundaries between fantasy and reality.
Restoration Magic (再生魔法,Saisei Mahō?) - One of the ancient magics originating from the "Age of Gods," which allows the user to restore the state of anything to either its previous or original condition. The true power of this magic is the ability to interfere with time, meaning it has the ability to manipulate the time of anything, anyplace or anyone to a point the user desires to. It can also be used to look into the past, or potential futures based on set decision variables.
Spirit Magic (魂魄魔法,Konpaku Mahō?) - One of the ancient magics originating from the "Age of Gods," which allows the user to manipulate the soul of a living being directly. It's possible to revive a living being back from the dead (time restriction applicable), or transfer the soul of a living being from one body to another, or even into a non-physical body as well, practically granting any living being immortality. The true power of this magic is the ability to manipulate the incorporeal elements of sentient beings. This included heat, electricity and other matterless energy that circulated within a person's body. That also included memories, thoughts and consciousness. With enough skill, a spirit magic user can take those incorporeal elements, duplicate them, and create a new soul out of them.
Evolution Magic (昇華魔法,Shōka Mahō?) - One of the ancient magics originating from the "Age of Gods," which allows the user to enhance or evolve all other forms of power, be it strong or weak. It can work on even other ancient magics as well, boosting their power and scope. The true power of this magic is the ability to manipulate information. When it was used to strengthen someone's stats or skills, it effectively overwrote the "information" of their abilities with something of a higher tier. Evolution magic can also be used to view the information of any person or object, as well as interfere with their total mana capacity.
Metamorphosis Magic (変成魔法,Hensei Mahō?) - One of the ancient magics originating from the "Age of Gods," which allows a user to remake the form of a normal being and reform them into a different form. Normally it's used to remake a normal organism and turn it into a monster, or even manipulate the magic stone of a monster and remake them. The true power of this magic is the ability to manipulate any organic material. Meaning not only animals, but it's also possible to remake plants or intelligent beings, and reform their structure as needed. Even byproducts of organic material, like paper or food, can also be manipulated by this magic. The magic stone which gets created during the process is just a byproduct of the process.
Concept Magic (概念魔法,Gainen Mahō?) - It is a form of ancient magic which is a combination of many other ancient magics. The main ability of concept magic is that allows one to interfere with the laws of the world and impress concepts upon it. By raising up a powerful wish or desire, it can be raised to a level of a concept before being forcefully materialized with magical power. However, since the user's desire at the time of use, is used as the base of the magic, to raise up and create the concept, the spell may not remain stable in subsequent uses, thus a single spell can only be used once under most circumstances. However, if the desire is still needed, it can be used more than once. It should be noted, however, that concept magic requires the user to concentrate on raising up their wish in order to materialize the concept, as such it wouldn't be useful in a battle where the user is under attack.
Language Comprehension (言語理解,Gengo Rikai?) - A base skill granted to all those who got summoned. It gives the user the ability to understand any language and be proficient in it.
Quotes
(To Yue): "I’ll protect you, and you’ll protect me. As long as we watch each other’s backs, we’ll be stronger than anyone. We’ll beat down anyone who stands against us and bust our way out of this shitty world!"[1]
(To David after he shot him): "I told you to mind your manners."[2]
(To Yuka): "Sonobe. Don’t die, all right? You've got guts. Well, for the most part."[2]
(To Tio): "Just go back to your den. Or just die and return to the earth!"[2]
(To Ilwa): "A piece of paper can be a good shield if you use it right. My job’s Synergist, you know? My duty is to make sure anything that can be useful is made useful. Don’t worry, I’ll make good use of your support."[3]
(To Cattleya): "I’ll kill anyone that makes themselves my enemy, even the gods themselves. I can’t imagine someone stuck as their pawn is much of a threat."[3]
(To Kouki): "God, you’re persistent. Amanogawa, you’re not mad about me killing her, are you? You're mad at yourself for not being able to kill her and pretending you’ve got a better reason for being pissed."[3]
(To Kouki): "It’s kill or be killed in this world. You’ve got to kill your enemies. What’s wrong with that?"[3]
(To Kouki): "It’s my policy to kill anyone who becomes my enemy. Unless I have a good reason not to, I’ll make sure to kill them. It doesn’t matter whether they’re good or evil, or whether they can resist or not. The moment you show mercy is the moment you die. I learned that the hard way at the bottom of the abyss. Those are just my values though, and I have no intention of pushing them on anyone else. Still, if you plan on standing against me just because you don’t like that, then... Even if you are my former classmates, I won’t show you any mercy."[3]
(To Noint): "I’d like to see you try, God’s Puppet!"[4]
(To Noint): "Looks like this ‘Irregular’ was more than you could handle."[4]
(To undead Meld): "So she got you too, huh? What a shame."[4]
(To Eri after wiping out her undead slaves) "So?"[4]
(To Eri): "I don’t care what drove you to this, I don't care what your motives are, and I don’t have time to listen to you explain them. If that’s all you’ve got to say... then die."[4]
(To Daisuke): "It wouldn’t have mattered if I was here or not, Hell would have freeze over before you’d manage to do anything worthwhile with your miserable existence."[4]
(To Daisuke): "Don’t pin the blame on other people. You’re the one who decided to stoop to this level. Both here and in Japan, you’ve always been the loser. You didn’t lose to other people. You’ve lost to yourself. You never once tried to take responsibility for anything. All you ever did was sit on the sidelines and insult everyone else, when the real loser was always you."[4]
(To Daisuke after punching him): "Good luck surviving out there. Knowing you, you probably won’t make it."[4]
(To Freid after murdered 100,000 demon troops): "You’re the moron here. Did I ever say I was fighting for the kingdom? Or that these guys were my comrades? Stop jumping to conclusions. If you really want to carry on your pointless war, be my guest. Just know that if you get in my way, I’ll wipe you off the face of the earth. Well, I don’t have time to kill all million of your stupid monsters, so I’ll let you go this time. Hurry up and get out of here. You’re the one in charge, right? Order your army to retreat."[4]
(To Kouki): "If I did tell you, will you even believe me!?"[4]
(To Kouki): "After all, we are talking about you who love to interpret things to your own convenience. The god Ehit whom the people of this world believed in and also specially chose you to be the Hero was a twisted evil god, and that your heroic efforts are completely meaningless, if I told you that, you definitely wouldn’t have believed me. You will probably get mad at me instead. Am I not wrong!?"[4]
(To Kouki and his other classmates): "Are you stupid? Why must I go to such trouble just to suit your delusion? Don't tell me that just because I am a classmate, you all think that it is natural for me to always risked my life and limb to help all of you. If you keep believing and spouting that sort of ridiculous crap, its gonna end up just like what happened with Hiyama."[4]
(To Kouki): "If I have power, I should use it for justice? It’s because you think like that you always end up messing up when it really matters. Personally, I think power should be wielded with a clear intent. You don’t do something because you have the power to. It’s because you want to do something that you obtain the power necessary to achieve it. If you really think you’re obligated to do things just because you have the strength to, then for you, strength is nothing more than a curse. You lack resolve, Amanogawa. Anyway, I’m not going to argue with you about the path I’ve chosen. If you keep pissing me off I’ll send you flying out of here like I did with Hiyama."[4]
(To Kouki): "Listen up, Amanogawa. I don’t care about your justice, and I have no interest in arguing with you about what’s right and wrong. We’re not friends, we’re not comrades, and we definitely don’t believe in the same things, so I have absolutely no intention of doing something just because you say so. All I did was allow you to accompany me for a bit. Don't you dare make me angry. The next time you do something stupid... I’ll break your arms and legs and send you back to the kingdom."[5]
(To the Haulia Tribe): "Cam. No, all of you Haulia. There’s no way I’m letting you use a plan so shitty it made Shea cry. If you’re doing this, your blades are reaching the emperor. Grab him by the hair, beat him down, and show all of his relatives, friends, and subordinates that they’re no match for you. Conquer the capital in just one night, and show those imperial bastards they’re done for! Teach them that nowhere’s safe from the Haulia’s blades! That no matter where they hide, your ears will find them! That anyone who makes themselves an enemy of the Haulia will mean a painful end! Carve your names into the history of the empire!"[5]
(To Shea): "You’re irreplaceable to me, Shea. I don’t want to hand you over to anyone else. Now that you’ve become special to me, I won’t ever let you go. I hope you’re ready."[6]
(To Kouki): "First, I decide what it is I want. Then, I decide what it is I need to do in order to make that happen. After that, all that’s left is to do it. There’s no point in worrying about whether I can do it or not. If I have time to worry, I have time to think about what my next move should be. I’ve decided. I’m going to back home to Japan with Yue and everyone. I’m going to show them all the cool things Earth has, and introduce them to my parents. That’s what I’m putting my life on the line for. I don’t have time to care about ‘what ifs’ that even my own subconscious doesn’t have the answers to."[7]
(To Kouki): "I know better than anyone I’m just putting the problem off instead of solving it, and that this isn’t a very human line of thought to begin with. But that’s still no reason to stop here."[7]
(After defeating his doppelgänger): "No matter what future’s waiting for me, I won’t stop struggling."[7]
(To Kouki): "Moron, You already lost to temptation."[8]
(To the corrupted Kouki after he shot one of his kneecaps) "Pathetic. Why don’t you use the extra feature I added to your equipment? You’d put up more of a fight that way at least."[8]
(To the corrupted Kouki): "When you’re this stupid, there’s no point even pointing out your stupidity. But let me say just one thing. Who do you think you are, saying Yue’s name without honorifics? You bastard."[8]
(To Freid): "What kind of an idiot would head straight into the enemy stronghold when they know it’s a trap? If we're gonna fight anyway, we’re better fighting here. Let’s settle this once and for all, Freid!"[9]
(To Freid): "If you want me to give up my weapons, you’re gonna have to pry them out of my cold, dead hands. So, if you don’t wanna fight here, you’d better rethink your demands."[9]
(To Adul): "Tio belongs to me now. If you don't like that, you’ll have to steal her back from me. I’ll accept your challenge anywhere, anytime."[9]
(To Shizuku): "Look, you have to be thorough. The Kojiki says to destroy your enemies so thoroughly that not even scraps of them remain."[10]
(To Ehit): "You must be pretty stupid if you actually believed anything your opponent said."[11]
(To Ehit): "Yue was smarter than you. That’s all there is to it."[11]
(To Ehit): "I mean, if I could have just overwhelmed you with force, I would have. But Yue’s life was on the line here, so I wasn’t gonna leave anything to chance. It’s only natural that I’d have two or three backup plans just in case, right?"[11]
(To Ehit): "You beat me in a battle of numbers, you overwhelmed me in close combat, and you were able to destroy all of my artifacts. But so what? Did you really think that you won just because of that?"[11]
(About to fire the Oath Bullet): "I’ll be taking Yue back now. Every last drop of her blood, every last strand of her hair, every single fragment of her soul belongs to me!"[11]
(To Yue): "I came for you, my vampire princess."[11]
(To Ehit): "You asked how I managed to kill Alvaheit, right? Well, the truth is, he just had the misfortune of being close by when I got truly pissed. Do you really think a guy like me would come up with something as banal as god-slaying concept magic?"[11]
(About to slain Ehit): "This is checkmate, you third-rate poser."[11]
(To Yue): "You’re like a fairy-tale heroine, Yue, blessing the protagonist with victory with a kiss."[11]
(To what was left of Ehit): "All right, you half-dead shade. I’ve got only one thing left to say to you."[11]
(About to slay what was left of Ehit with Yue): "You get what you fucking deserve, you bastard!"[11]
(To Miledi): "‘Live your life however you wish. I know your choices will definitely help this world.’ That’s what you told me when we first met. Now that it’s all over, do you still think my choices were the right ones?"[11]
Most of Hajime's inventions are named in German and are based on the anime he has watched.
Hajime is quite sensitive being called a Chunibyo and a Tsundere.
Despite Hajime's incredible skills with transmutation magic, his affinity for earth magic did not improve. This is due to earth magic focusing on controlling rocks like projectiles, whereas transmutation is about altering the composition of minerals.[13]
Before his transformation, Hajime's mana color was the same as Shea's and Miledi's.
Hajime's Demon Eye has a faint blue glow in the Light Novel, but is red in the Anime.
Other names Hajime considered for Yue include "Tsukuyo," "Luna" and "Selena."[8]
Hajime's favorite beverage is a slightly bitter café au lait.[14]
Hajime's English voice actor, Matt Shipman, also voiced Hiro from Darling in the Franxx. He was romantically involved with Zero Two, who was also voiced by Yue's English voice actress, Tia Ballard.
Hajime is the only one of his classmates who writes his first name in katakana.
Hajime is similar to Murata Tsuneyoshi, a military officer of the Imperial Japanese Army during the Meiji era. Like Hajime, he was an expert marksman and firearm designer who invented the Murata rifle, paralleling Hajime's affinity for military weapons. Murata also crafted the first guntō, the Murata-tou, a Kissaki Moroha Zukuri katana, a similar design to the Black Blade Hajime crafted and gave to Shizuku.
Although Hajime is able to manipulate his mana, he is not an Atavist due to not being a descendant of of those from Ehit's homeworld, as his ability to manipulate mana stems from a magic-induced mutation.
During Hajime's time in Oscar Orcus' lair, he made Yue a replica of the spear "Lævateinn" that was wielded by Flandre Scarlet from Touhou Project, and even had Yue say her catchphrase "I went "kyu" and it went "boom"" (キュッとしてドカーン,Kyutto Shite Dokān?).[15]
It is hinted that Hajime is the reincarnation of Alfard Il Dastia.

The illustration of Hajime and Kaori in the Season Two ending is similar to the illustration that appears in the second ending of Ashita no Joe 2"Hateshinaki Yami No Kanatani" (果てしなき闇の彼方に,Beyond the Endless Darkness?) by Takeshi Obo, featuring Joe Yabuki and Yōko Shiraki.
