Debra Barn (デボラ・バーン, Debora Bān?) was the mother of the Holy Church's Holy Templar Knights Commander Laus Barn.
Appearance[]
Debra was a middle-aged woman, who appeared much younger than her actual age.
Personality[]
Debra was a devout worshipper of the Holy Church and its god Ehit. She demanded the absolute best of her family members in order for them to best serve Ehit, and would not hesitate to willingly sacrifice them for their cause.
Chronology[]
Debra and Laus' wife Ricolis greeted Laus as he returned home from the church one evening. As they were having dinner, Debra and Ricolis addressed Laus' refusal to have another wife, despite their encouragement of him to have more wives in order to give birth to more children that would serve the church and Ehit. Sharm attempted to diffuse the tension by brining up Sharm's lessons from school. During the conversation, Sharm asked his father if certain demons were actually being good people in spite of the church teaching its followers that they were the enemies of their god. This immediately shocked Sharm's family, and while Debra was angered at Sharm, Laus encouraged his son to speak up by asking what encouraged him to ask such a question. Sharm explained that he hoped that the demons were good so that both they and humans would not have to fight each other anymore. Laus got angered after hearing this rational, upon realizing that Ehit had always orchestrated the ongoing wars between the humans and demons. This display of anger scared Debra and the others, but Laus came back to his senses and assured Sharm that he was not mad at him.
When Laus was chosen by the church to lead an important mission to capture a beastman from the Haltina Republic who possessed Ancient Magic, his family threw him a celebratory dinner the night before his departure. During their meal, Sharm hesitantly asked his father if it was a sin to befriend beastmen, despite it being decreed so by the church. Debra and Ricolis were upset with Laus indulging Sharm's curiosity, but he spoke calmly when answering his son's questions.
After Laus left for his mission to the Haltina Republic, Debra and her family visited the Holy Church's main cathedral everyday to pray for his safety. When Laus returned from his mission, he planned to flee the church with his family. Laus arrived at the church to retrieve them, however, he saw Sharm being dragged out in a severely injured state, after having been tortured to submit to Ehit through magical brainwashing, but had managed to resist. He was being dragged out by a pair of knights, while also be accompanied by Debra, Ricolis, Kaime and Selm. They all expressed their disappointment in Sharm for his unwillingness to conform to Ehit's will. In the end, Laus managed to escape with Sharm, alongside Reinheit Ashe.

Relationships[]
Laus Barn[]
Debra was proud of her son's accomplishments for the church. Due to her fervent worship of the church, she would often pressure him to have more wives in order for him to produce more children that could serve their god, despite Laus's presence for a monogamous marriage with his current wife. As a result of this, Laus grew to despise her ideals, but sill sought to rescue her when he joined the Liberators.
Sharm Barn[]
Debra would often reprimand her youngest grandson for questioning the teachings that were imprinted upon them by the Holy Church. After Sharm left the church, Debra despised her grandson and immediately considered him to be a heretic. She even went so far as attempting to kill him in order to appease the church.
Quotes[]
- (To Laus): "All people of Elbard belong to Lord Ehit. It would set a bad example for you to have only one wife. One of your duties is fathering as many children as possible, in the hopes of producing an heir capable of using Lord Ehit’s magic."[1]
- (To Kaime): "Kaime, this is undoubtedly a chance granted to us by Lord Ehit! Slay that traitor and redeem the Barn family’s honor!"[2]
Trivia[]
- The name "Debra" is derived from the Hebrew "dvorá > Dəḇôrā/Devorah," meaning "bee." In the Book of Judges from the Old Testament, Deborah was a prophetess, as well as the only female judge of pre-monarchic Israel. In addition, her surname "Barn" may have been named after Vearn from Dragon Quest, since they are spelled with the same Japanese characters.
- In Volume 5 of Arifureta Zero, Debra was regarded as Laus' mother-in-law.
